The white color of tigers is due to a rare genetic mutation called leucism, which causes a deficiency in melanin (the pigment responsible for color). Unlike albinism, leucism is not total, so the white coat is always marked with black stripes, the eyes are blue, and the nose is pink.
Leucism is not a distinct breed, but a trait that can appear in Bengal or Siberian tigers. White tigers do not survive in the wild because their color makes them more visible to their prey and predators.
