The French link in this bit means that pressure is applied on both sides of the tongue. Some horses with a low palate may find this bit more comfortable, as the mouthpiece does not have to come into contact with the roof of the mouth when the bit is in action. 

 

Smaller sizes of this bit come with smaller rings to ensure the bit stays in proportion.
